Hey, everyone! Welcome back to another week of animal fun at Stately Sniffs the Web! Ever wondered about the history of pets? Here are some animals who have changed the way the world thinks about pets forever. Let’s take a ride through the history of pets!

The Saluki

The oldest known breed of dog is the Saluki. Salukis were bred from the quickest wolves and have been around at least 6,000 years! That’s a long time! They were used as hunting dogs by the ancient Egyptians and they are bred now for their beauty and endurance.

Cats in Egypt

You can thank Remix for this one. She loves to bring this up all the time. Apparently, cats were worshipped in ancient Egypt and were considered to be equal to the Pharaohs! The Pharaohs were the Egyptian kings so that means cats were royalty. If you’d like a little more on the history of cats as pets, check out this short documentary by Naomi!

The Pekingese

While they weren’t exactly worshipped, the Pekingese dogs have been the favorite breed of Chinese royalty for the past 2,000 years! Bred to look like lions, these dogs were so highly respected that the monks would carry them in the sleeves of their robes. Lucky dogs!

Goldfish

Another pet the Chinese royalty made popular is the goldfish. About 1500 years ago, goldfish began to be raised in outside pools or “watergardens”. About 800 years later, they started to be kept indoors as pets! In this video, a group of trained Chinese goldfish put on an impressive show!

I hope you enjoyed my look at some pets in history. There are so many fascinating stories out there so feel free to sniff some out yourself and if you find something interesting, let me know! You can send me your links and blog ideas to animalwow.com/contact. That’s it for this week’s Stately Sniffs Blog. Stay tuned next week for more animal info!
